Description |
A round commemorative gold medal for the V.M.I. class of 1889 which had 23 graduates on July 4, 1889. On the front of the medal is a statue of T.J. Jackson with lettering in relief: "THE GIFT OF ENGLISH GENTLEMAN. JACKSON-HOPE MEDAL." On the reverse of the medal is W.N. HAMLETT and FIRST in 2 banners at the top. Underneath the banners is "DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE 1889" and at the bottom in latin is "IN PACE DECUS IN BELLO PRAESIDIUM." Note that the name, rank & date are engraved on the medal, all other marks are in relief. The case (163b) that holds it is blue velvet lined with blue satin. It has a two piece metal clasp and the lids are hinged to both sides of the case; the medal is held in the middle section. |

The name on the medal is Hamlet, William Nathan who graduated number 1 in his class. William Nathan Hamlet spent 4 years at VMI and graduated number 1 in his class with a degree in civil engineering and was an assistant principle at Richmond, Va H.S., the head of the Mathematics Department at Fredericksburg State Teachers College, he died April 9, 1941. |
