Provenance |
Flag of the 21st North Carolina Infantry, Co. D, "Forysthe Rifles". Made by Bettie and Laura Lemley; Mollie and Carrie Fries; and Nellie Belo, sister of unit commander, Capt. Alfred H. Belo. Presented to the unit -- more specifically, Capt. Belo -- by six young ladies of Salem, North Carolina, on May 27, 1860, as that day was his 22nd birthday. [Conflicting information indicates the flag was officially presented to the regiment in front of the Belo House in Old Salem on June 17, 1861.] The presentation address was delivered by Bettie Lemley. The flag was carried until the fall of 1861; or, according to the donor, through the four years of the war. |
