Flag of the 1st Maryland Infantry, USA. Captured at Front Royal, Virginia, May 24, 1862 by the 1st Maryland Infantry, C. S. A., commanded by Gen. Bradley T. Johnson. The Battle of Front Royal is the one instance of the war when regiments from opposing sides with the same designation faced off -- in this case, the 1st Maryland Infantry (USA) against the 1st Maryland Infantry (CSA). The battle was also a rare example of urban combat during the war, in which the fighting occurred in the town streets. |
