Lithograph, "Washington Family", George Washington and his family seated at a table with a slave in the right background. Lithographic print depicting George Washington, his wife Martha Custis Washington, two of her grandchildren (a boy and a girl), and an African American slave. The slave is probably Christopher Sheels (or Shields), a slave owned by George Washington. He unsuccessfully attempted to escape from Mount Vernon. The Washingtons moved him to void any legal possiblity of his gaining his freedom. He does not appear ever to have been emancipated by Washington, his wife, or their heirs. |
