James A. Cox enlisted as a Private on April 25, 1861 in the Washington Guard, which became Co. A, 30th Virginia Infantry. He was listed as absent due to unknown illness in September and October 1862. From then on, he was listed as present through May 1864. Cox was wounded at Cold Harbor on June 6, 1864, resulting in the amputation of one of his thumbs. He returned to duty on July 24, 1864. Cox was listed as a deserter on February 14 - 28, 1865, but not to the enemy. |
