On May 17, 1862 Floyd was appointed major general of the Virginia State Line by the Virginia general assembly, and 6 days later received a commission as brigadier general in the Confederate Army. He took part in the battle at Fort Donelson, Tennessee, where he failed to request reinforcements and evacuate quickly enough, and he deserted his garrison, all resulting in his being removed from command. |
