A.P. Hill graduated from West Point in 1847 and saw action during the Mexican and Seminole Wars. Hill married Kitty Morgan McClung in 1859; she was John Hunt Morgan's sister, recently widowed. They would have four daughters, two surviving to adulthood. Hill was made Col. of the 13th Virginia Infantry after resiging his U.S. Army commission in March 1861. He was then appointed Brig. Gen. on February 28, 1862 and promoted to Maj. Gen. on May 26, same year. Hill was promoted to Lt. Gen. on May 24, 1863 after Lt. Gen. Jackon's death from wounds received during the Battle of Chancellorsville and was given command of the 3rd Corps. After he was killed during the break of the Confederate lines on April 2, Hill was buried in several places before being placed under a monument dedicated to him at the intersection of Hermitage and Laburnum on the northside of Richmond in a residential area. |
