Humphreys was born in Scotland and at the outbreak of war, was residing in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was 27 years old and working as a Clerk. Humphreys enlisted as a Private in the 2nd Company of Washington Louisiana Artillery on May 26, 1861. He was listed as being present on rolls from then to April 1862. From June 10 to August 31, 1862, he was listed as absent, sick in Richmond, Virginia. From September 1862 through June 1863, Humphreys was listed as being present on the rolls. After the Battle of Gettysburg, he was wounded on July 6 at Williamsport, Maryland and captured by Union troops on July 14. Humphreys was then admitted to the Cotton Factory Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on August 23 from the Seminary Hospital in Maryland. He was sent to Fort McHenry on September 10 and transferred to Point Lookout Military Prison on September 16. He stayed at Point Lookout until paroled from Hammond U. S. General Hospital there for exchange. Humphreys was exchanged at City Point, Virginia on March 8, 1864. He was then listed on the rolls through April 30, 1864 as Absent paroles POW. Humphreys was then listed as present on rolls from May 1864 to February 1865. |
