He served as a cavalry instructor at Carlisle Barracks, before reporting for duty in January 1858 as 2d lieutenant of the 2d Cavalry on the Texas frontier. When war broke out in 1861 Lee was teaching cavalry tactics at West Point, but he resigned from the U.S. Army following Virginia's secession. Lee served first on the staff of Brigadier General Richard S. Ewell, was later promoted to colonel of the 1st Virginia Cavalry in April 1862, and accompanied Major General JEB Stuart on his ride around the Army of the Potomac. He was appointed brigadier general in July 1862 and later took part in such battles as Chancellorsville and Gettysburg before receiving his commission as major general in September 1863. |
