Miles was elected to the Confederate Provisional Congress and appointed Chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs. While serving in the Confederate Provisional Congress, Miles chaired the "Committee on the Flag and Seal," He was considered to be one of Jefferson Davis' strongest friends and allies. Miles was buried in Union Cemetery in Union, West Virginia, which was the ancestral home of his wife. |

He taught at the College of Charleston from 1843-1855. In 1855 Miles was elected as the Mayor of Charleston, and then in 1857 he won election as a Representative in the U. S. Congress, a post which he resigned in December 1860. After the war, he managed to keep hold of the land so he remained financially comfortable. From 1865-1880, Miles resided in Nelson County, Virginia; then from 1881-1882, he served as President of a newly reorganized University of South Carolina in Columbia. From 1883 on, he went down to Louisiana to manage his father-in-law's sugar plantation in Ascension Parish and performed no other public service. |
