Clerk for B riscoe Baldwin, later chief ordnance officer for CS Army, in 1862. After serving in the Ordnance Department, he joined the staff of Fitzhugh Lee by July 1862, and served there until the end of the war. On April 9, 1865, he had been given orders along the Confederate line to suspend action, pending General Robert E. Lee's likely surrender, when he was struck in the chest by a minie ball. He was left for dead on the field, and was found by a Union surgeon and taken to a Union hospital in Farmville, where he recuperated for several weeks. |
