He was born Salley Howell Nelson on May 31, 1832 in Person County, North Carolina. In 1850, he legally changed his name to Howell Stevens Nelson. He married Emily Ann Winfree on July 3, 1850. They had two children. She died prior to 1857, which was the year he moved to Mecklenburg County, Virginia. He married Ann Judson Overbey on August 20, 1857. They had eleven children. He was assigned from the 22nd Regt. Virginia Militia as a private to Co. K, 6th Virginia Infantry on April 1, 1862. The rolls show him as being sick in Petersburg on May 15, 1862 and then AWOL on July 1, 1862. Family history maintains he received a medical discharge. No enlistment is evident, but he joined Co. G (2nd), 14th Virginia Infantry during spring 1864 as a private. He was captured at Five Forks on April 1, 1865 and sent from City Point (Hopewell) to Point Lookout Military Prison on April 5. He was released from Point Lookout upon oath on June 15. His physical description was given as follows: 6' 2" tall, fair complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. His wife Ann Judson Overbey Nelson died on July 27, 1905 and was buried at Nelson Baptist Church cemetery in Mecklenburg County. Howell Stevens Nelson died on November 27, 1910 at Nelson, Virginia (near Virgilina) and was buried beside his wife Ann at Nelson Baptist Church cemetery. |
