A grandson of Thomas Jefferson, Randolph was born and buried at "Monticello." He served in the U.S. Navy in the 1830's, studied law at the University of Virginia, and was an officer in the Richmond Howitzers militia company before the war. During the war, he rose from Captain of the 1st Company to Colonel of the unit in September of 1861 and brigadier general (Provisional Army of the Confederate States) in February 1862. He resigned from military service to become Confederate Secretary of War, a post he occupied for eight months (March 18, 1862-November 16, 1862). |
