Their regiment, the 13th North Carolina Infantry, fought in every major battle of the Army of Northern Virginia. July 1, 1863: The 13th participated in the charge of Pender’s Division along Seminary Ridge. The regiment sustained 75 percent casualties during the charge, including Private Levi Walker, who was wounded in the left leg while carrying the regimental colors. He was the fifth standard bearer to be struck down during the charge. He was carried to a Confederate field hospital, where his leg was amputated. July 2, 1863: Private Walker was in a field hospital. July 3, 1863: Private Walker was in a field hospital. After Gettysburg: During the Confederate retreat south to Virginia from Gettysburg, Levi was taken prisoner and sent to David’s Island, New York, a Federal prison hospital. He was paroled and exchanged in October 1863. On May 2, 1864, he retired to the Invalid Corps. Levi Walker survived the war and returned to his native North Carolina. At the end of the war Levi Walker got engaged and planned for the wedding with his fiance. On the day of the wedding, he fell and broke his prosthetic leg. His brother Henry, who had been wounded in virtually the same place and close to the same time period, lent him his own prosthetic leg and the ceremony continued. |
