Ward was killed on the battlefield in the battle of Williamsburg, May 5, 1862. He was brought into town with a card upon his breast giving his name, rank, and his desire to be given a Christian burial. Captain Haynes, an officer with the Federal Army who was with Colonel Ward at West Point asked permission to bury him with military honors. Captain Haynes's wish was granted. |
