Cdv studio portrait of a man, seated, from knees up; 3/4 pose, facing viewer's right; side chair visible; hair is long and loose around shoulders; wearing double-breasted civilian frock coat, unbuttoned over waistcoat; hands clasped together on top of walking stick at chest height; hat resting on man's left knee. "Mr. Ruffin / 1861" is handwritten in black ink in bottom margin on front. Handwritten on obverse, "Presented by Frank H. Elmore Mr. Ruffin 1861"; handwritten on reverse, "Mr. Ruffin of VA, [illegible] have fired the first gun. He left VA- before she seceded & came to W Caroli-na to enter the S.
