Sixth-plate ambrotype with color added; man seated in with hands in lap; hair parted on side, curled at ears, looking at camera, moustache; wearing double-breasted unform frock coat, twelve buttons tinted gold, top right button buttoned, collar insignia tinted gold, vest buttoned, three buttons visible, hands touching at fingertips in lap, wearing gloves or gauntlets; nonpareil-style gilt mat, embossed with ornate urn and foliate scroll detail; preserver is stamped with foliate scroll pattern; ; case is leather-covered wood embosed with geometric pattern on exterior cover; two brass hooks; cased together with daguerreotype of John Hunter as a boy FIC2009.00051b, cases do not match; two case sections held together with black cloth tape |

An early daguerreotype and a wartime ambrotype document the life of Confederate soldier John Hunter. Too little is known about these images to determine which of the several John Hunters in the Confederate army these photographs depict, but it could be (1) Lt. John Hunter, Jr., a University of Virginia student who served in Capt. Carrington's Co., Virginia Light Artillery (Charlottesville Artillery); he survived the war to become a prominent lawyer in Louisa County, Virginia. |
