Quarter-plate ambrotype on ruby glass; man standing outdoors in front of tent, leaning to the left against tent pole, left hand wrapped around pole, left leg crossed in front of right at ankles, looking at camera, hair parted on side, beard and moustache; wearing uniform frock coat, open; turned-down shirt collar, wide horizontal necktie, possibly wearing light-colored vest, right elbow bent and holding hat, straight trousers; tent flaps are folded back, inside the tent to the left on the ground is a camp bed, to that right of that stand wooden shelves mounted on a box, lined with bottles containing solutions, and to the right of subject not visible; bare ground in front of tent and tree branches in leaf visible around the top of the tent; double elliptical gilt mat embossed with scroll and ribbon design; preserver stamped with scroll, foliate and geometric design; case is leather-covered wood with floral medallion and scroll embossed on obverse and reverse exterior sections; obverse and reverse case sections detached from eachother; obverse interior [cover] case section is lined with [faded] red velvet embossed with foliate scroll and floral medallion; brass hooks and eyes in tact; |

Watson Meredith Gentry of Tennessee studied in Europe and practiced medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York City before the Civil War. He was commissioned a surgeon by Gov. Isham G. Harris on June 14, 1861 with the rank of Major of Cavalry. He went out as surgeon of the 17th Tennessee Regiment Volunteers, and later was division surgeon of Bragg's army. The last two years of the war he was reassigned to post duty as surgeon in chief of hospitals at Montgomery, Alabama, his health having failed from the severity of field life. He had charge of nine hospitals with 2,300 beds. |
