Sixth-plate ambrotype with applied color: image of a young man (Edward Harrison Estes) standing, in uniform, facing and looking directly at the camera; wearing a frock coat with seven gold tinted buttons in a straight line and a kepi with gold accents; at the natural waist is a belt on the outside of the coat with a bowie knife attached immediately in front of his right arm; at his left side is a long arm with an attached bayonet; case is leather-covered wood case with brass hinge and latch; embossed floral motif design on obverse and reverse exterior case sections; faded yellow-brown velvet with impressed paisley design in inside of obverse interior [cover] sections; tape on back has "Edward Harrison Estes circa June 1861" handwritten in black ink; |

He was sent home on sick furlough August 17, 1861; was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines on May 31, 1862, and admittted to a hospital; was detailed as enrolling officer by August 31, 1862. |
