Found on a battlefield near Richmond, Virginia, this is a photograph of an unidentified young militia lieutenant (believed Federal). Found by Charles A. Barker of the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry. The lieutenant may have served in the 1st New York Mounted Rifles (based upon his hat badge, unique to the mounted rifles, and similar uniform to men from that regiment), and may be William Sanger, who served with the 1st New York Mounted Rifles until 1863, when he transferred to the 2nd New York Cavalry. |
