Ninth-plate ambrotype with applied color; man seated in uniform; looking at camera, seated, from waist up, short hair parted on side, beard and mustache; wearing double-breasted uniform coat, with shoulderboards, velvet shawl collarstanding collar, striped tie in horizontal bow, one button visible, tinted gold, document rolled up and placed in breast pocket on outside of coat on the left side; oval mat, pebblefinish; preserver has stamped foliate pattern; case [missing lid] is leather-covered wood, with embossed foliate scroll pattern around a central medallion with urn; hinges, hook and eye missing; |

Wartime photograph of Major Giles Buckner Cooke (1838-1937). Volunteer Aide-de-Camp, Adjutant General to Brig. Gen. Philip St. George Cocke; Assisstant Adjutant General to Maj. Gen. Braxtion Bragg; Staff of Maj. Gen. J. Samuel Jones; Staff of Brig. Gen. William M. Gardner; Assisstant Adjutant General to Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard; Acting Assisstan Inspector General to Gen. Robert E. Lee. After serving on the staffs of several other generals, Giles Cooke became acting assissten inspector general to Robert E. Lee late in 1864. Cooke was honorary chaplain for life of the United Confederate Veterans and the longest-surviving member of Lee's staff. |
