Sixth-plate ambrotype with accent tinting; bust portrait 3/4 facing viewer's left, looking straight ahead, hair parted on side, mustache and sideburns; in double-breasted uniform coat, collar with Confederate General's insignia tinted gold, 12 buttons visible, tinted gold, knot of necktie visible behind collar; oval metal mat; case is leather-covered wood with embossed medallion surrounded by foliate pattern; gilt scroll around exterior and interior case edges on both obverse and reverse sections; obverse case [cover] section lined in faded velvet, embossed with foliate scroll; note adhered to felt in door section, inscribed as follows: "Archibald Gracie/Brig. Gen. C.S.A./Taken during the war./Presented by his daugh-/ter 223/Miss Adeline Gracie"; brasshook and latch in tact; |
