Half-plate ambrotype with applied color of three soldiers, seated, in uniform overcoats, facing camera, looking at camera; man seated at left wearing overcoat with cape, kepi with tinted gold buttons at sides, hair long and cut below ears, clean shaven, cheeks and lips tinted pink, knitted scarf tied around neck, belt around waist with large gold tinted belt plate, leather strap starting from right shoulder and going down under belt at left side of hip, leather pouch attached to it, right hand in lap, left hand holding rifle just above stock, barrel leaning against left shoulder, bayonet affixed, legs at knee crossed right over left, top of right boot and sock visible; man seated center has Hardee hat with insignia, hair long, cut below ears, moustache, cheeks and lips tinted pink, overcoat with cape, buttoned, five tinted gold buttons visible, leather straps crossed on chest, pouch visble on left at waist, leather belt around waist, large gold-tinted belt plate, right hand in lap, left hand holding rifle mid-barrel, barrel leaning against left shoulder, bayonet affixed, legs crossed right over left, right sock visible; man seated on right kepi with hat button on left visible, tinted gold, hair cut mid-ear, moustache, cheeks and lips tinted pink, overcoat with cape, buttoned, five tinted buttons visible, leather stap going across chest from right shoulder to left side of waist at belt, pouch visible, leather belt around waist with large gold-tinted belt plate, right hand in lap, left hand holding rifle just above stock, barrel resting against left shoulder, legs crossed right over left, top of right sock visible; Case: gilt mat with embossing, preserver stamped with foliate scroll design; red [faded] felt pad in interior obverse [cover] sectionwith two pieces of newspaper clipping (obituaries of Christopher Columbus Taylor and James D. Jackson) affixed, as well as white label with the number 37 printed on it, embossed-leather-coverd wood case with grape cluster and foliate motif, obverse and reverse case sections detached, brass latches and latch hooks intact. |

The young men in this photograph -- Christopher Columbus Taylor, James D. Jackson, and James H. Porter -- were all privates in the 3rd Georgia Infantry, Co. D. This photo was taken near Richmond during the winter of 1861-1862; their uniforms, weapons, and acoutrements (note Georgia oval belt buckles) were typical of those used in the early campaigns of the regiment. Taylor and Jackson were both killed at the Battle of Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862. |
