Sixth-plate ambrotype on ruby glass with accent tinting; man seated, body turned 3/4 to viewer's right, head turned towards camera, looking at camera; hair parted on side, cropped at ear lobes, clean shaven, cheeks and lips tinted pink; wearing single-breasted uniform shell jacket, standing collar, insignia tinted gold, buttoned up, nine buttons tinted gold; shoulderboards, tinted gold, left hand in lap, right elbow on table draped in damask, right hand holding hat (?), left leg visible with light trousers; hands in lap; oval embossed gilt mat, preserver stamped with simple scroll design; case is leather-covered wood, exterior reverse embossed with foliate scroll; obverse [cover] missing; brass latch in tact; label adhered to reverse exterior case reads: "Charles H Powell aged 16/1859/Trumpeter/Goochland Light Dragoons/Organised 1859 by/Capt Julien Harrison/Later Co F 4th Va Cav ANV" |

Photograph of Charles H. Powell, age 16, in 1859, as trumpeter in the "Goochland Light Dragoons" (organized 1859 by Capt Julien Harrison). This unit would later be reorganized as Company F, 4th Virginia Cavalry. Powell would continue to serve in that unit during the Civil War. |
