Sixth-plate ambrotype with accent tinting; little girl, standing on caned chair, facing slightly to viewer's left, hair parted down middle and smoothed over ears, cheeks faintly tinted pink, wide, oval neckline off the shoulders with cap sleeves drawn up by ribbons, lace edging, bodice possibly has fan pleats, waistband at natural waistline, full skirt with ruffles that are possibly growth tucks, lace edging and multiple underskirts, pantalets cuffed mid-thigh visible, white stockings, ankle boots with laces, left hand on back of chair, other at side; double-elliptical gilt mat with embossed scrollwork; preserver stamped woth foliate pattern; leather-covered wood case, brown leather; obverse and reverse exterior sections embossed with foliate motif; interior obverse [cover] section is liined with red felt pad [faded] embossed with foliate design, gilt edging around interior case sections, case is in two pieces, brass latches and latch hooks intact; Note enclosed with photograph says the following: "According to a story told by the donor, Pvt. Heartwell Kincaid Adams of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry, this ambrotype was in a haversack he took from the body of a dead Federal soldier at High Bridge a few days before Appomattox. A Federal prisoner in Pvt. Adams' care offered $2 to share the food in the haversack. The prisoner recognized the photograph as his dead brother's child, but he declined to identify or take the picture." |

According to Pvt. Heartwell Kincaid Adams of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry, this ambrotype was in a haversack he took from the body of a dead Federal soldier at High Bridge a few days before Appomattox. A Federal prisoner in Pvt. Adams' care offered $2 to share the food in the haversack. The prisoner recognized the photograph as his dead brother's child, but he declined to identify or take the picture. |
