Ninth-plate ambrotype with applied color of a woman seated, in 3/4 profile to viewer's left, head turned to the camera; hair parted down the middle with a coiled coronet and enhanced side wings pushed back behind it, hair appears to be tinted brown, eyes appear to be tinted blue and skin appears to be tinted beige; cheeks and lips are tinted pink, dangle earrings tinted gold, hair necklace [?] with cross pendant hanging around neck, oval-necked bodice edged in lace piping and off-the-shoulder flared cap sleeves with double horizontal pleats, brooch set in coiled gold pinned to center top of bodice, full skirt of same material as bodice - possibly silk - with panels of alternate pattern material at waist, left forearm slightly visible and hand is behind a partially open fan, with left thumb holding the edge, fan is painted in an 18th century motif, pink tinting on dress of one of the caricatures, right arm is bent at the elbow, right hand wearing a black netted mitt, holding fan; behind the woman is an elaborate backdrop depicting a mountain scene with red and green tinting and sunrays; Non-pareil gilt mat with embossed beading around edge, double preserver, red felt door pad with floral and foliate motif embossing, embossed-leather case covering with gem, shell and foliate motif, union case in two sections, brass latch and latch hook intact. |
