Ninth-plate ambrotype with accent tinting; man from waist up, facing/looking at camera; hair parted on side, modified wave, widow's peak, cropped at tips of ears; clean shaven, cheeks and lips tinted pink; wearing double-breasted jacket/coat, unbuttoned, over vest and shirt; white collar turned down, large horizontal necktie tied slightly asymetrically, vest with collar and lapels turned up, connected below tie with a tab; oval gilt mat; preserver has simple scroll/foliate motif; case is leather-covered wood, with foliage surrounding starburst medallion on obverse and reverse exterior sections; brass hook and eye in tact; handwritten note with image reads, "This is a icture of my uncle Chalres Shelton, son of David R. Shelton of Louisa, Co. VA who died in Prison at Vicksburg Miss." |

Photograph of Charles Shelton, son of David R. Shelton of Louisa, County, Virginia. He became a prisoner of war at Vicksburg when the city was surrendered in July 1863, but was sick and stayed at the hopsital. He died there on July 25, 1863. |
