Sixth-plate ambrotype with color added; man seated, facing camera, from knees up; looking at camera, wearing brimmed hat with right side pinned up, thin moustache and cheeks and lips tinted pink; wearing single-breasted uniform frock coat, tinted grey, buttoned up, nine buttons visible, tinted gold, standing collar, belt with buckle around waist; chevrons on sleeves; right arm resting on book on table draped in damask tinted blue and red, left arm bent at elbows, hand holding grip of sheathed knife with thumb tucked in belt; double elliptical embossed gilt mat; preserver has stamped scroll design; case is leather-covered wood, embossed on obverse and reverse exterior sections with floral scroll; interior obverse [door] section lined in faded velvvet embossed with furn motif; brass latch and eye in tact; Note with image reads, "D. A. Meade 1861 Richmond, VA" and typed, "VA. R Case C. No. 12 David A. Meade, Brusnwick Co. VA. aged 17. Member of Diswiddie troop, 3rd Va Cav. Died from wound received while gallantly chargin the enemy in battle near Richmond. Given by his sister." |
