Half-plate ambrotype with applied color; man standing in civilian dress, facing camera, looking at camera; hair air parted on side, trimmed mid-ear, clean shaven, cheeks and lips tinted pink, cigar hanging out of left side of mouth; wearing single-breasted civilian frock coat open to show vest with paisley pattern and revers, watch chain hanging from top button hole and draped to the left with watch in pocket, tinted gold, white shirt front, two shirt buttons, tinted gold, turned-down collar, narrow horizontal tie slightly asymmetrical, frock coat has a velvet collar and short, wide lapels, two buttons visible right side, white handkerchief hanging out of left breast pocket, flower in left lapel, sleeves pushed up, shirt cuffs exposed, cufflink visible in left cuff, left hand resting on damask-covered table, right arm and hand hanging by side, ring on pinky finger, tinted gold, loose, dark trousers; oval gilt mat with scrolling and ribbon motif; leather covered wood case held together at spine by black cloth tape; exterior sections of case embossed with foliate scroll, urn; obverse interior [cover] lined with red felt pad embossed; |

Provenance |
Memphis-born George Washington Livesay was a clerk in a Petersburg, Virginia, grocery store prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. He was an organizer of the "Cockade Cavalry," which became Co. E, 13th Virginia Cavalry. Captured in May 1863, he was imprisoned briefly in Washington, D. C., and exchanged. He transferred late in the war to Graham’s Petersburg Horse Artillery and was killed in action on August 18, 1864, at the age of 22 years, fighting on the outskirts of his adopted city. |
