Sixth-plate ambrotype with color added; man facing camera, bust portrait, looking at camera; hair parted on side and cut at ear level; beard and moustache; cheeks tinted pink, standing collar, necktie tied horizontally, starched shirt front with small button tinted gold, double-breasted civilian frock coat with notched lapels; oval gilt mat, [possibly made by Scovill Manufacturing of Watertown, Connecticut] with embossed motifs of the U.S. flag in the top left and right upper corners, a tall ship in the lower left corner and a cannon in the lower right corner, along with drums and bayonets, and the words "CONSTITUTION" etched down lower left oval edge, "July 4/1776" etched along bottom, and "AND UNION" etched up the lower right oval edge; leather-covered wood case with gilded edging and scrollwork intact with both sections; obverse interior cover lined in deep red velvet pad intact in door section, brass clasp intact; newspaper clipping with image reads, "Pirvate Wm. H. Hollyday. Killed June 3d 1864; at Gains' Farm, in engagement witht the enemy, Private Wm. H. Holiday 2d Maryland Infantry. Balitmore papers Please Copy" |
