Sixth-plate ambrotype with accent tinting; man seated, turned slightly to viewer's right; hair parted at side, clipped above ears, clean shaven; cheeks tinted pink, turned down shirt collar, horizontal necktie, backing missing but tie possibly is dark; wearing single-breasted uniform shell jacket with standing collar, shoulder tabs, unbuttoned, five buttons visible, tinted gold; vest buttoned up to last button at collar, eight buttons, tinted gold, watch chain hanging from fourth button on vest, looped to the left, watch pocket invisible under jacket, ribbon hanging from beneath third button on shell kacket, looped down across waist to the left and ends underneath left side of jacket, possibly for a pince-nez, left hand in lap, ring on smallest finger tinted gold, kepi or forage cap on table, insignia on top tinted gold, right arm on table, table draped in cloth, legs crossed left over rightat knee; non-pareil embossed gilt mat; preserver is stamped with simple foliate design; case is leather-covered wood exterior reverse emobssed with central medallion (obverse cover missing); brass latches in tact; gilded design aourn interio edge of case; plate loose in case; handwriten note with image: "Taken Feb. 22, 1862 Charles H. Powell age 19, Chief Trumpiter (G.L.D.) Co F. 4th Virginia Cav ANVa, Ben H. Robinson, Col." ; |
