Sixth-plate ambrotype on ruby glass with color added; man standing at attention, outdoors, facing camera, wearing slouch hat pinned up on the left side, clean shaven with cheeks tinted pink, dark shirt, no collar, two buttons visible, dark trousers, revolver tucked in at waist, heels together, boots or brogan shoes, right arm at side, left arm bent at elbow, left hand holding sword, the blade of which is being held up straight and turned in beside left side of face and possibly resting on left shoulder; tree trunk of a pine tree to viewer's left, pine tree trunks visible in background, sticks and branches on the ground, which is bare and appears to be covered with pine needles, brush piled in the background; non-pareil embossed gilt mat; preserver is stamped with scroll motif; case is leather-covered wood embossed with simple scroll design on obverse and reverse exterior sections; interior obverse [cover] section is liined in red velvet, embossed with scroll foliate design; leather around case section hinge is ripping; top wood piece of interior obverse section missing; brass latch and eye in tact; |
