Quarter-plate tintype with applied color; two soldiers in uniform, seated, facing camera, looking at camera; on proper right: man wearing a slouch hat cocked to the right, hair cut at tops of ears, trim moustache, cheeks and lips tinted pink, shirt collar turned down, two shirt buttons visible, tinted gold, single-breasted shell jacket buttoned at the top, tinted gold, button visible further down on jacket, tinted gold, loose trousers, tinted blue, left hand on lap, ring on pinky finger tinted gold, right arm draped behind man seated to the right, chair seat visible; on proper left a man wearing a Zouave cap cocked to the left, hair cut short above ears, trimmed moustache and lower lip hair worn imperiale-style, cheeks and lips tinted pink, shirt collar turned down, slim striped necktie tied in a bow, shell jacket with dark standing collar, possibly tinted red, top button buttoned, six buttons visible, tinted gold, belt and belt buckle visible, loose trousers tinted blue, legs crossed right over left, right forearm resting on right thigh, ring on ring finger, left arm draped behind man sitting to the left; behind the right shoulder of the man to the right is an image of a U.S. flag flying on a flagstaff, stars and stripes visible flowing to the left behind the man's cap; image plate is framed in a double elliptical gilt metal mat with a pressed floral and foliate motif at each corner and mid-section intervals; the ends of the mat are folded around the plate, and along the right side is stamped: "Holmes Booth & Haydens Superfine." mat manufactured by Holmes Booth & Haydens Superfine, Waterbury, Connecticut; |
