Sixth-plate ambrotype with applied color; man seated, facing camera; looking at camera; in uniform, legs crossed at knee, left hand in lap, right holding sword at side, wearing single-breasted uniform frock coat, buttoned, 8 buttons visible, belt with belt plate; buttons visible at each sleeve; possibly wearing hat; gilded buttons, sword, belt plate, and epaulettes; non-pareil gilt mat with embossed beading around edge; preserver is stamped with simple foliate design; case is leather-covered wood; exterior reverse embossed with scroll design; gilt scroll around exterior and interior edges; obverse [cover] case section missing |
