Sixth-plate ambrotype with area tinting; man seated, 3/4 pose facing viewer's right, looking at camera; hair parted on side, cropped at top of ears, moustache and goatee; cheeks and lips tinted pink; shirt collar turned down, necktie tied horizontally, single-breasted shell jacket open; collar up with dark piping along edge, shell jacket tinted grey, six buttons tinted gold, shoulder tabs visible, dark piping around edges, button tinted gold visible on left shoulder tab, left hand in lap, dark chevrons on left sleeve, right elbow/forearm resting on book on draped table, draping tinted red and green, dark chevrons on right sleeve, legs crossed, left over right, trousers tinted grey with dark trouser braid; non-pareil embossed gilt mat; preserver stamped with foliate scroll; obverse interior [cover] lined with red felt pad with embossed fern motif; leather-covered leather case embossed with flower and vine motif, the two sections of which are held together on the interior by black, cloth tape; |
