Ninth-plate ambrotype with applied color of a woman seated, facing camera, looking at camera; hair parted down middle, smoothed down and back, with bun [?] ornamented with lace which is visible hanging down at either side of the head; cheeks and lips tinted pink; small white lace collar crossed at neck, large tinted brooch in center, polka dot ribbon hanging down in a strip beneath brooch, dress made of large tattersall-check, dropped shoulders with belled outersleeves and white bouffant undersleeves, wide waistband, full skirt, left elbow resting on table draped in damask cloth, left hand hanging down, rings on index and ring fingers tinted gold, right hand resting on lap; Double-elliptical gilt mat embossed in scrollwork motif, double preserver, felt pad in door section with embossed scrolling motif, dark brown embossed leather case with scroll motif embossing and a central medallion on each section made of a plastic material that probably at one time had a cameo or raised figure adhered to it, scrape marks visible on both medallions where figure was cut off; top joiner missing on door section, case in two pieces, brass latch and latch hook intact; handwritten note with image, "Found by the side of a dead Confederate Soldier on the Battlefield of Chancellorsville, Sunday, May 3d 1863. |
