Quarter-plate ambrotype of a man, seated in chair; facing camera, looking at camera, hair cut short, parted on side, full beard, shell jacket, buttoned, six buttons visible, belt around waist with large plate, trousers with stripe visible up right side, left arm bent at elbow, forearm up against chest with hand holding barrel of U.S. Model 1842 musket with fixed bayonet, near muzzle which shows nosecap configuration with a front sight, right arm slightly bent with hand down and wrapped around musket barrel near stock which is resting on the floor, chair rungs visible between legs; double elliptical gilt mat embossed with scroll and garland motif, preserver stamped with scroll pattern; embossed leather-covered case with lily medallion at center surrounded by floral motif; door section missing, two brass latch hooks intact; |

Ensign William Samuel Woods was in the 20th Alabama Infantry, Co. B. He enlisted as a private; was promoted to 1st corporal; appointed Ensign April 20, 1864, to rank April 28, 1864. He was killed at the Battle of Kolb's Farm in Georgia on June 22, 1864, and was most certainly killed while carrying the regimental colors. Family legend had it that the brown spot on his forehead in the photograph indicated his death wound. |
