Quarter-plate ambrotype on ruby glass with applied color, of a man seated in uniform, facing camera, looking at camera, hair cut short, swept back, full beard and moustache, cheeks tinted pink; wearing shell jacket, buttoned, three rows of buttons plastron-style, 15 buttons in all, tinted gold; standing collar with piping, piping along buttonhole edge of jacket, three buttons on each sleeve cuff, all tinted gold, holding sword/dirk in right hand in lap, blade balanced on left hand in lap, sword hilt tinted gold; Plate loose, case missing. |

Provenance |
1st Lt. George Cornelius Richwood of the 1st Florida Infantry, Old Co. H, New Co. A, was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh while serving as a 1st Sergeant. He was wounded again at Dalton, Georgia, and then captured at Murfreesboro in December 1864. Richwood spent the remainder of the war at the Fort Delaware prison camp, where he practiced his drawing and sold his sketches to other prisoners and guards. |
