Quarter-plate ambrotype with applied color on ruby glass of a man standing at attention, facing camera, looking at camera, wearing shako with a large plume and insignia, hair cut mid-ear, slightly curled on right, clean shaven, cheeks and lips tinted pink; wearing single-breasted braided coatee, with 15 buttons visible, tinted gold, white standing collar, white epaulettes, white cuffs with three buttons visible on left cuff, tinted gold, white cross belts with breastplate tinted gold, white belt around waist with large beltplate tinted gold, cap pouch attached to belt at right, straight trousers with white trouser braid visible, hands and arms at sides, wearing white gloves, right hand holding Springfield Model 1855 rifle-musket with butt on the ground and bayonet fixed, studio backdrop visible where it does not completely reach the floor; Double-elliptical gilt mat, plain, preserver stamped with simple foliate scroll; , embossed-leather-covered case with floral motif, door section missing, gilt edging on interior of case, two latch hooks intact; obverse [cover] section missing; |
