Cdv of a studio bust portrait of a woman, 3/4 pose, facing left; sitter appears to be wearing earrings; her hair is plaited, and parted off-center; handwritten on obverse, "Mrs. Jefferson Davis;" handwritten on reverse, "I'll hide thee with a veil mirror [ill.] would that I were fair;" handwritten on reverse, ""This picture was sent to Jefferson Davis while he was imprisoned at Fortress Monroe. It was the first photograph sent to him by his devoted wife Mrs. Varina Davis to the Most Honorable Jefferson Davis;" affixed to reverse is a $.02 United States Internal Revinue stamp with George Washington's image on it; |
