Sixth-plate ambrotype with applied color of a man seated in uniform, 3/4 pose facing viewer's right, looking at camera, hair parted on subject's left side, cut above ears, moustache and goatee; cheeks tinted pink, double-breasted uniform frock coat, buttoned, twelve buttons visible, tinted gold, standing collar with gold tinted insignia, white standing shirt collar visible; left hand in lap, right arm resting on table, tablecloth has pattern, legs crossed at knee left over right; Oval gilt mat embossed with scroll motif, cover glass is missing and image plate is exposed and separated from case; thermoplastic union case, raised nautical motif, purple velvet door pad with central foliate motif embossing, bottom sections of case missing, casemaker's printed advertisement in image section reads: "A.P. CRITCHLOW & CO.,/Manufacturers of/Daguerreotype Cases./A.P.C. & Co./Are the Original Inventors of the/Composition for the Union Case,/(so called,) including all the various shades/of color and fineness of texture pecu-/liar to their manufacture and of the/Embracing Riveted Hinges, thus/securing them from breaking out/as do others that are inserted/with or without a/metal brace./Hinge Patented/Oct. 14, 1856 & April 21, 1857." |
