Half-plate ambrotype with applied color; full length portrait, man standing in uniform, slouch hat, left side pinned up, hair cut short, clean shaven, cheeks tinted pink, turned-down collar of shell jacket, edged in braid, bow tie, single-breasted uniform jacket buttoned, five gold tinted buttons visible, chausseur cuffs visible on sleeves, edged in braid, loose trousers, boots, standing at parade rest, right foot placed forward; the subject is fully equipped; hanging from his left shoulder is a large leather strap which triangles into a horizontal strap visible slightly down on the chest, with two more leather staps extending from either end; strap to the right hangs down across the chest to the right hip and has a canteen attached to it; left stap hangs down and has attached to it a leather pouch at left hip level; bedroll and blanket are visible behind the left shoulder and the left arm, wearing a leather belt with a large buckle, a cartridge box is attached to the belt on the left side, and a knife is inserted in the belt just to the right of the buckle; holding a Model 1855 Springfield Rifle-Musket with bayonet attached, stock on the ground to the left of the left foot and standing at a perpendicular angle to the right with the subject hoilding the gun by the barrel right hand over left hand; undecorated floor and backdrop; mat is a double-elliptical plain gilt mat, preserver is stamped with floliate scroll; maroon velvet door pad with cardstock affixed to it; obverse and reverse case sections detached from eachother; gilt interior scrollwork along edges, leather covering on outer case embossed with plain central rectangle with embossed bands above and below which start at brass toggles on door section and end in brass clasps on image section. Written on cardstock : "Thomas Taylor - a private soldier/who belonged to Company K. of the/8th Louisiana Regiment - of the 8th/Brigade C.S.A./"I am glad to report that my chief/service in the field was with/'Stonewall Jackson,' our regiment/helping to win his first decisive/victories in the Valley Campaign/in which he chased Banks from/Winchester into Maryland - and/led to the active, vigorous and/[]ederful successes of the Confederate/[]se immediately after_'/Wounded and taken prisoner/[] the Battle of Sharpsburg;" adhered to reverse is an old museum identification number, LA 85; |

Provenance |
Corporal Thomas Taylor of Company K, 8th Louisiana Infantry. He fought in the 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, the Peninsula Campaign, and the Battle of Second Manassas, before being wounded at Antietam. He was shot in his left leg just above the knee, and left on the battlefield by retreating Confederates. He was taken prisoner, but survived the war. |
