Sixth-plate ambrotype with applied color; man seated, facing camera, looking slightly to the left of camera, hair parted on side, modified wave, cut at top of ear lobes, moustache and goatee, cheeks tinted pink, frock coat with standing collar, collar and shoulders trimmed in braid at seams, coat unbuttoned, five buttons visible on right, tinted gold, white shirt front, collar turned down, thin bow tie with ends extended and hanging loosely, legs crossed right over left, left hand on lap, shirt cuff visible, possible braid trim at coat sleeve cuff, right arm resting on table, shirt cuff visible, kepi resting on table to the left of right hand, insignia "MRC," [reversed]; oval gilt mat with embossed floral motif; preserver stamped with foliate scroll; obverse case [cover] lined in red felt pad, faded, with embossed scrolled foliate motif; embossed-leather-covered wood case, cover in embossed scroll and leaf motif, obverse and reverse case sections detached from each other; latch and latch hook intact; |

Provenance |
Private Joseph H. Skinner was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines on June 1, 1862, and died nearly a month later. "When his country called upon her sons to take up their arms in her defence, he was among the first to respond," wrote "A Comrade," in a published obituary. "He was a dutiful son, an affectionate brother, a true friend, and a brave soldier. Peace to his ashes." His photograph was presented with the clipped obituary and a lock of hair. |
