Provenance |
The Virginia-born son of Irish immigrants (named O’Farrell), seventeen-year-old John Farrell arrived in Richmond on St. Patrick’s Day, 1862, from his home in Harper’s Ferry and attempted to enroll in the newly organized Crenshaw Battery. After three days of personal lobbying with Gov. John Letcher and Capt. Thomas Ellet, Farrell was able to enlist. He served with the unit for three years until he was captured at Sailor’s Creek in April 1865. Farrell became a physician after the war. |
