Provenance |
This satchel was used by Robert T. Chapman to bring the Great Seal of the Confederacy from the Wyon Company in England to Judah Benjamin in Richmond. Chapman had the satchel made in London in 1864, putting into it many pounds of lead to insure its sinking rather than capture by the Federals. The Seal and Chapman arrived safely in Wilmington, N.C., but Chapman was taken ill and ordered a lieutenant Campbell to carry the Seal to Benjamin. The original satchel was left with Chapman and he retained it until donating it to the Museum. |
