Model 1850 U.S. Foot Officer's Sword: slightly curved, single-edged blade with two fullers; gilded brass hilt with guard decorated with pierced design of floral sprays, knuckle bow pierced for sword knot near pommel which is decorated on forward edge with oak leaves; wood grip covered with leather and twisted wire. No scabbard. |

Lt. Richard W. Heath used this sword during the war. He was wounded at the Battle of Second Manassas; and either the Battle of the Wilderness (according to the inscripton on the reverse of the image) or the Petersburg Campaign. He was taken prisoner, and according to the inscription on the reverse, died at Fort Delaware. |
