Hat worn by Francis S. Bartow of Savannah, Georgia, during the battle of First Manassas. "When leaving Savannah for Virginia, he said, 'I go to Virginia to illustrate Georgia.' He fell in the first battle of Manassas. When brought home his mother [Frances Bartow] laid her head upon his bier and said: 'My son, I gave you to your country, and now I give you to your God.' " (1905 catalog) Bartow had no military experience, but taught himself tactics. While learning his duties as commander of the 8th Georgia Infantry, the 44-year-old Bartow wrote his mother: "I sleep about five hours in the 24, and very seldom take off my clothes or even my shoes. My toilet is made in the morning by putting on my hat." |
