Provenance |
Lt. Col. Bradfute Warwick wore this pair of leggings (chaps) during the Civil War. Warwick was mortally wounded during the Battle at Gaines' Mill on June 27, 1862. Goodyear advertisements from the 1850s listed "vulcanized rubber leggings," so these were manufactured, not made in the field. This is also supported by the stamp on the interior, which indicates they were made by the Union India Rubber Company of New York, with Goodyear's patent of December 28, 1859 |
