Badge made from a gutta percha button and inlaid with silver. The front has a herald design with a checked motif in the lower left corner, a horse in the lower right, and a cross and star design in the upper right. Inscribed on the front diagonally: "Savoir Faire" ("To know how to do"). Inscribed on the back: "Ft. De Mch 18, CDM". |

"A chess badge, cut with his pen knife by Capt. Charles McCoy during his imprisonment in Fort Delaware. It is a pin to be worn on the lapel of a coat, inlaid with designs indicative of a chessboard in silver and carved out of a large gutta percha button."
