Description |
The cane is a simple, tapered wood shaft with a metal end cap. |
Material |
wood/metal |
Dimensions |
L-39 inches |
Provenance |
The cane was cut from the windowsill of the house where Lt. General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson was born in Clarksburg, (West) Virginia. (notes with artifact) "Cane, made from a polonia tree at General T. J. Jackson's grave." (1905 Catalog) [NOTE: Although this is the history given for this cane in the 1905 Catalog, all notes referencing cane #3 in the Rockbridge County case indicate it was from the house of Jackson's birth, not the site of his burial. As the grave association is attached to another cane in the VA Room collection, it is believed (although not definitive) that the birth site story is true for this cane. Curator CMW, 8/26/2014] |
